Intelligent Position and Risk Management — How bitcointelemetry Protects Your Capital
· Trading Systems
Most bots get this wrong
Most automated trading systems open the same position size every time — e.g. always 0.1 BTC, regardless of what the market is doing. This approach is simple, but expensive. It works in calm markets. When volatility spikes — those same positions get stopped out by normal price noise, before the market even has a chance to move in the right direction.
At bitcointelemetry, we took a different approach. Instead of a fixed size, our system calculates the optimal position in real time — based on current volatility, account balance, and a user-defined risk limit.
The foundation: volatility-based position sizing (ATR)
ATR (Average True Range) measures how much BTC typically moves in one candle. If ATR = $800, the market "breathes" about $800 per interval.
Our system uses ATR as the natural unit of risk:
SL distance = ATR × atr_multiplier
account_risk = balance × risk_pct
position = account_risk / SL distance
Example — $10,000 account, ATR = $800, atr_multiplier = 2.0, risk_pct = 1%:
SL distance = $800 × 2.0 = $1,600
account_risk = $10,000 × 0.01 = $100
position = $100 / $1,600 = 0.0625 BTC
Result: if the market moves against you by $1,600, you lose exactly $100 — 1% of capital. No more.
When volatility rises to ATR = $2,000 (crash, pump), the system automatically shrinks the position to 0.025 BTC. No manual intervention. Capital is protected automatically.
What others don't have: volatility regime detection
This is where bitcointelemetry goes beyond standard approaches.
On top of the current ATR, our engine analyzes how volatility evolves over time — comparing short-term volatility (last 24 candles) against a long-term baseline (last 96 candles):
vol_ratio = sigma_short / sigma_long
| Regime | vol_ratio | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 LOW | < 0.85 | Market calming down — can act more aggressively |
| ⚪ MID | 0.85–1.25 | Normal volatility — parameters unchanged |
| 🔴 HIGH | > 1.25 | Volatility spike — system enters protective mode |
How regime affects position size — real numbers
With ATR=$800, balance=$10,000, risk_pct=1%, atr_multiplier=2.0:
🟢 LOW — calm market, system acts more aggressively
atr_multiplier: 2.0 → 1.5 (tighter stop — market is calm)
risk_pct: 1% → 1.1% (larger exposure)
position = ($10,000 × 0.011) / ($800 × 1.5) = 0.092 BTC
⚪ MID — normal operation
position = ($10,000 × 0.01) / ($800 × 2.0) = 0.063 BTC
🔴 HIGH — system enters protective mode
atr_multiplier: 2.0 → 2.8 (wider stop — noise is larger)
risk_pct: 1% → 0.75% (reduced exposure)
position = ($10,000 × 0.0075) / ($800 × 2.8) = 0.033 BTC
Same configuration. Position size difference: almost 3×. The system automatically reduces exposure before the user even has a chance to react to changing market conditions.
Why this matters during crashes and pumps
During sharp price moves, many systems take their biggest losses not because they had bad signals — but because they had oversized positions when volatility exploded. Our engine detects the rising vol_ratio in real time, before the move becomes a disaster.
This isn't theory — it's built into every position open.
Summary
bitcointelemetry implements what quant funds have used for decades — volatility-based fixed fractional position sizing, extended with dynamic regime adjustment.
The result: whether the market is calm or chaotic, the system always risks exactly what you defined. No more, no less.
Your capital is protected — automatically, in real time, on every candle.
